So I hope someone will be able to come in and help.
The person I am trying to trace was RICHARD, known as DICKY, BELL my Great Grandfather b. 1876 in Liverpool and died (at least I think so) in 1954 in the Wallasey Mariner's Home, New Brighton, Wallasey, Merseyside.
This home was primarily for retired mariners who were in the Merchant Navy, he was a Boatswain. I have been in touch with this home although I have not received any imformation from them at this time as they state their records are 'hit and miss' from this time.
Richard married in 1900 ADA METCALF and went on to have 8 children born in the following order and residing in Everton, Liverpool:
Charles b.1902
Elizabeth b. 1905 but who I believe died young
Dorothy b. 1907 who I also believe may have died young as she and her sister Elizabeth were not remembered by the family although could just be people going their separate ways in life
Margaret b. 1909
Ada b. 26/12/1912, d. February 1992
Gertrude b. 1918
George and his twin William b. 1920. William was supposed to have died as a young baby.
Richard apparently ran away to sea aged 14 and worked his way up to a Boatswain. On searching the censuses I have found records for a Richard Bell on the 1901 census who was a Ship's Greaser and by 1911 he was a Marine Fireman. Would this have been a normal route to progress to a Boatswain?
If anyone can associate themselves with this family or who can give me any information about the Mariner's home or a way to trace Richard in the Merchant Navy I would gratefully appreciate this. If not, thank you for taking the time to read this message and your interest.
Regards
Sandra
