"His g-g-g-g-great grandson Robert Baker Girdlestone, in his Genealogical Notes published in 1904, described the will of 'this ancient Richard' (as he describes him),
"In his will after providing for his wife Elizabeth, he left his houses, lands etc in Thornage and Hunworth to his son Thomas, who was to pay certain sums to the other three children, Edmund, Elizabeth and Ann. He seems to have been a thriving man, and was apparently churchwarden; but what was his occupation? A gentleman? No. What then? A linen weaver! This was an occupation of much importance in those days (as can be seen from Parliamentary papers — linen cloth being largely exported, while linen-yarn was imported from Ireland and the Low Countries in the age of Elizabeth), and one of his sons (also named Richard) afterwards carried it on at the neighbouring village of Sharrington."
