Biography Goldthorpe was a haberdasher who bought a country estate, Clementhorpe priory, from Sir Arthur Darcy, together with lands in Bishopthorpe, Middlethorpe and elsewhere in Yorkshire, part of which he later sold to the archbishop of York. Goldthorpe died 16 Mar. 1560, and was buried in York minster. A Catholic, he promised ‘an alb with a vestment’ for St. Thomas’s Hospital, York, and it was during his mayoralty that mass was said again in St. William’s chapel, Ouse Bridge. His will bequeathed the Clementhorpe property to his wife, and after her death to their sons Thomas and Peter. Thomas, the heir, was only 18, and in November 1560 his wardship was granted to Sir Thomas Gargrave.
