About Richard James Hannaford
'No one in this district stands higher in public esteem as a builder than Mr Hannaford'. (May 1869)
Mr Hannaford had been rearing [dairy] cattle for upwards of a quarter of a century at his property at Monkittee. (Oct 1884).
Richard Hannaford's first wife, Elizabeth, died on Christmas Day, 1863; by mid 1864, Richard had formed a close relationship with Matilda Jermain, whose husband, and father of two daughters, had disappeared. The couple began cohabitation, with Matilda taking her two daughters from her former marriage to Hannaford's 'Devon Farm' in Monkittee, Braidwood, NSW.
Quite a man, Richard Hannaford fathered 24 children..12 from each wife. Six of Elizabeth's 12 children did not survive, but all 14 children Matilda bore lived into adulthood.
