Richard L. Longini was a professor at Carnegie Mellon University who held more than 100 patents in solid state electronics. He met his wife Muriel Davis as a student at the University of Chicago in the 1930s. During World War II, he worked for Westinghouse Electric in the Pittsburgh area, where he was involved in classified production for the war effort. After the war, he remained in Pittsburgh, earning his PhD at the University of Pittsburgh in 1948. He began his academic career in 1962 as a professor of electrical engineering at Carnegie-Mellon, and never formally retired.
