J.P.; Farmer of "Holderness and Glenfillan", Barkly East. Landed in South Africa 15 December 1846.
Richard Newenham Orpen was an artist, a farmer at “Holderness and Glenfillan"in the Barkly East district. During 1852/53, in company with Sir Edward Shelley, was first white man to penetrate and to explore the depths of the Kalahari Desert. During this expedition they both very nearly died but were helped by some local Hottentot inhabitants to eventually reach the Moffat Mission near Kuruman.
