R.C. Pinney Was Character in Development of Southern Utah

Richard Charles Pinney, one of the handcart pioneers and outstanding characters in the early development of Sevier, Piute, Garfield and Iron Counties, died February 14, in the Memorial Hospital at Logan. At the time of his death he was eighty three years of age, and the oldest living pioneer in Cache Valley, having entered Cache Valley as a boy. He was employed there in feeding church cattle during the winter of 1858 and 1859, prior to moving to Southern Utah. For fifty five years he was a typical frontiersman. He served in the Black Hawk Indian War, in which he received a scalp wound, which left a scar he carried until his death. He was one of the first mail carriers between Salt Lake City and Southern Utah, prior to the extension of the railroad.

He was a pioneer in the sawmill industry of Southern Utah, and assisted in various enterprises coincidental to the development of this section. His greatest characteristic was honesty, trust, both church and civic, which he held.

Richard Charles Pinney was born in London in 1846. He came to the United States with his parents and two sisters, who had joined the L.D.S. Church, in 1852, crossing the plains with the handcart company in 1855. His father and one sister died from cholera while making the journey across the plains, and while the immigrant train of necessity moved on, he assisted his mother in burying them in a grave which he and his mother lined with cedar boughs and banked with rocks and mud plaster. He witnessed the grasshopper war in Salt Lake valley, and frequently, when relating pioneer incidents recalled for his listeners how the seagulls came from Great Salt Lake and devoured the insects.

Richard Charles Pinney was married to Susan Domgaard Smith, and to this union were born eleven children, of whom the following survive: Archie Pinney of Logan, Mrs. Joseph Goulding of Panquitch, Robert Pinney of Joseph and Geo. S. Pinney of Richfield, together with eighteen grandchildren and thirty-two great grandchildren. His wife passed away thirteen years ago and two years later he moved from Henryville to Smithfield, going to Logan a year later, where he has since worked in the temple, doing vicarious work for 1000 souls.
