Richard Scruggs

1st born son of William Hudson Scruggs (1801-1889) and Rebecca Mathers Scruggs (1805-1863). His family and his mother's extended Mathers family relocated to Florida about 1838.

Richard was a farmer with land holdings near Aucilla. He served as a Sergeant in Capt. Partridge's Company A, 15th Florida Cavalry, Confederate States Army. He enlisted in early 1862 and spent several months hospitalized in Greenville, Alabama due to pneumonia. He was paroled at the war's end at Madison, Florida. He was the husband of Margaretta "Maggie" Frances Cooper (1845-1885), married 2 May 1869 in Jefferson County, FL.

Richard relocated his family to Thomas County, Ga for a short time (abt 1882 to 1888) but moved back to Florida after the death of his wife, Maggie. He then was enumerated in Alachua County on the 1900 census. He died in Boardman, Marion County, FL in 1903. His actual burial location is unknown but a memorial marker was placed at this cemetery.
