About Richard Villiers Surtees

The death of Mr Richard Villiers Surtees in his 85th year at his home, "Stanford," Katikati, on April 26, marks the passing of one of Katikati's most outstanding personalities of the early days of the settlement. Mr Surtees came to New Zealand by the ship Lady Jocelyn in July, 1878, and later settled at Stanford, where he has since resided. He married Miss Emily Charlotte Sophie Stewart, eldest daughter of the late Mr George Vesey Stewart, the founder of the Katikati settlement. Mr Surtees left for England in 1886, but returned to his farm in October, 1904. Mr Surtees was the eldest son of the late Richard Surtees, of Holtby Rectory, York, and of Dinsdale-on-Tees, Darlington, England. He was educated at Malvern College, Oxford, and was a great athlete, winning many trophies and representing Oxford against Cambridge in the years 1875 and 1876. In the early history of Katikati he took an interest in public matters. Before the war he was a member of the Katikati Road Board and a director of the Katikati Dairy Company, and in the very early days treasurer of the Katikati Racing Club. He retained his interest in the racing world almost right up to the time of his death, and in his early days followed the hounds. He was a staunch Conservative and held strong views on Radicalism and Socialism. Mr Surtees is survived by his widow, one son, Mr R. Scott Surtees. and five daughters, Mrs W. W. Bruce, of Auckland, Mrs F. W. F. Fagan, of Auckland, Mrs A. E. Smith, of Marton, Mrs J. D. Smith, of Marton, and Miss S. Surtees, England. Source: Waihi Daily Telegraph (7 May 1938).
