About Richard Webb, of Stamford

Not the son of Richard Webb, of Norwalk, who had no children.
--------------------------

Disputed Origins

This statement is not accurate:

Richard Webb, born in England in 1611, was 15 years old when the family arrived in America. Richard lived with his parents in Norwalk until about 1654, when he moved to Stamford as one of the first settlers of that town.

Many years ago, it was thought that Richard Webb was the son of Richard Webb and Grace Wilson. This was proven false in the article "Richard Webb of Stamford" in The American Genealogist, June 1949.[3][1]

Biography

Richard Webb married Margery, presumably in Stamford, CT, and together they had 5 sons and 2 daughters. Richard owned and operated the first mill in Stamford which had previously been abandoned as 'worthless'. The family lived in a house on what is now Main Street, near the Mill River. Richard served two years as a Selectmen in Stamford and represented Stamford in the Connecticut General Court as early as 1667, indicating he was a person of stature in the Stamford community.

Richard Webb made his will on 07 January 1675/76, and he died on 15 March 1675/76 at Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut. The inventory of estate was dated 29 April 1676 and [the will?] names his wife Margery, son Joseph, who took the mill and ran it with his mother; Richard, who had uplands at Westcotts; Joshua who took lands in Newfield and the tools which were in Huntington Long Island; Caleb and Samuel, whose legacy was the care of their mother; and Sarah.

Family

Richard married Margery. Margery was most likely born about 1634, which would make her about 18 years old when she was married and about 41 years old when she had her last child Jonathan. She married Richard Webb about 1652, New Haven, Connecticut.

They had the following children:

  1. Richard WEBB III was born about 1646 in Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.
  2. John WEBB was born about 1650 in Northampton, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.
  3. Sarah WEBB
  4. Joseph WEBB
  5. Mary WEBB was born in 1656 in Stamford, Fairfield County, Connecticut.

  10. Jonathon WEBB Sr
