Although she had been hospitalized in recent weeks, she had returned to her home. She was stricken at her home and died shortly after arriving at the hospital. Funeral services were held Monday, April 9, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Leland, with the Rev. Dan Christensen officiating. Burial was in Forest Home Cemetery, Leland. Rita L. Branstad was born in Burlington, Iowa, January 13, 1926, the daughter of Louis and Gertrude Goldstein) Garland. She received her education in the public schools of Burlington, Sioux City, and graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1944. She attended Waldorf College, Forest City. On January 11, 1946, she was married to Edward A. Branstad at the family farm near Leland. The couple farmed near Leland before moving to Forest City in 1973. Mrs. Branstad had been employed in Forest City at the former Reuben's De­partment Store, worked as receptionist and bookkeeper in the office of Dr. Bolton, at the Travel House travel agency and managed a beauty shop. She was a member of the Forest City Hospital Auxiliary, the Forest City Women's Club, the American Degion Auxiliary, her bridge club and Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Leland. She is survived by her husband, Edward A. Branstad, Forest City; her sons, Governor Terry E. Branstad, Des Moines, and Monroe, Leland; grandchildren, Eric, Allison and Marcus Bran­stad, Des Moines, and Christine, Jordan, Andrew and David Branstad; a brother; Monroe A. Garland of Beverly Hills, Caifornia, and a sister, Jeanne B.Garland of Pomona, California. She was preceded in death by her parents. Casket bearers were Don R. Anderson, Tom Bowen, Joe DeBoest, A. L. Heeren, Alvin Meinecke and Arnie Murra. Honorary pallbearers were Arnold Ambroson, Gerald Bowman, Dr. W. David Clark, Dr. C. A. Gustafson, Claire Haugen, Gilmer Haugen, R. L. McClement and Duene Peterson.
