brief biography

Robert of Strathearn, who ruled Strathearn 1223–1245, is the fourth known Mormaer of Strathearn, but of course this is simply a source problem and certainly does not mean that he actually was the fourth.

Robert was the fourth son of Mormaer Gille Brigte. Not much is known of his reign, but we do know that in 1237 he travelled to York as part of the Scottish delegation who negotiated the Treaty of York. It seems he largely confined himself to his comital demesne, which would explain his conspicuous absence from the records, despite a relatively long reign.

Earl Robert's wife was named Matilda (1178-1247). They had three sons and two daughters:

1. Malise II of Strathearn, who succeeded as Earl
2. Hugh, who became a friar and died c. 1290
3. Gille Brigte/Gilbert, who acquired the lands of Durie and Belnollo in Fife, become the progenitor of the Duries
4. Annabella, who married firstly John of Restalrig, and secondly Sir Patrick Graham of Kincardine, who was killed at the Battle of Dunbar
5. Mary, married Sir John Johnstone
6. Matilda/Maud, who married Alexander, Earl of Menteith

4. ROBERT (-before Aug 1244). "Robertus filius Gilberti comitis de Stratheryn" confirmed possessions of Inchaffray Abbey by charter dated to [1221/23][719]. He succeeded his father as Earl of Strathearn. ... The name of Robert’s wife is not known. A charter of her son "M. comes de Stratherin" dated 1247 refer to the rights "in vita comitisse matris nostre" and provides for after her death[722].

Robert & his wife had [six] children:

• a) [FERGUS .
• b) MALISE (-in France [before 23 Nov] 1271, bur Dunblane). His parentage is confirmed by the charter dated 1247 under which "M. comes de Stratherin" confirmed the donations made by "Gilberti avi nostri et…bone memorie Roberti patris nostri comitum de Stratherin" to Inchaffray Abbey[725]. He succeeded his father as Earl of Strathearn.
• c) GILBERT (-after 1268).
• d) HUGH (-after 12 Dec 1257). Monk.
• e) ANNABELLA ([1230/40]-after 3 Sep 1296). "Malisius comes Strathern" granted "terram de Kynkardyn in Kather ieuenas…juxta Huctahardouer" to "Amabilie sorori mee ad ipsam maritandam" by undated charter[731]. [m firstly[, as his second wife,] JOHN of Lestalrig, son of ---.] m [secondly] ([1251/60]%29 PATRICK [II] Graham, son of [DAVID [III] de Graham & his wife Agnes ---] (-killed in battle Dunbar 28 Apr 1296).
• f) MARY (-after 1284). "Johannes de Jonstone miles" ratified the donation by "domina Maria sponsa mea" of "tenemento suo de Strathy" to Inchaffray Abbey by charter dated 1284[735]. m JOHN de Johnstone, son of --- (-after 1284).
