Robert Allen Baker

Doctor of Musical Arts Degree to Robert Baker - Robert A. Baker, son of Mr. & Mrs. John E. Baker, 820 6th Ave., has received the degree of Doctor of Musical Arts in Composition from the University of Illinois. Dr. Baker is a 1951 graduate of Leavenworth High School. From 1951 to 1954 he attended Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.

After serving two years with the U.S. Army in Germany, he returned to Washington University where he was awarded the Bachelor of Arts degree in 1957 and the master of Arts degree in 1958. He has held teaching assistantships at both Washington University and at the University of Illinois, and since September 1960, has held research assistantships and now has a research associateship to study computer applications to music analysis, composition, and printing.

He is a member of the national honor societies Phi Beta Kappa and Pi Kappa Lambda, and is co-author with Dr. Lejaren A. Hiller, Jr., of a recent publication, "Computer Music".

His doctoral thesis is entitled, "A Statistical Analysis of the Harmonic Practice of the 18th and Early 19th Centuries." His compositions include both orchestral and chamber works, as well as smaller vocal and choral pieces.

Dr. Baker and his wife, the former Miss Lorraine Orlowski of Leavenworth, live at Urbana, Illinois.
