"Robert Thomas Hamilton Benson was born Apr. 29, 1834, near Bath Co., VA and died Jan. 24, 1919, at his home near Tallmansville, Upshur Co., WV, aged 81 years, 8 months, and 25 days. He was a son of Robert A. and Sarah Leslie (Donaghe) [sic] Benson and came to WV with his parents several years prior to the Civil War and settled in Calhoun Co.

In 1854, he was married to Eveline Merritt. To this union were born Robert D., John C., and Sarah E. Benson, the latter dying in 1883. His first wife dying in 1865 at or near Buckhannon, he was again married in 1866 to widow Christena (Rowan) Ours to which union were born 4 children: 2 boys, Thomas G. and Leslie A., and 2 girls, Minnie O. and Mollie B., twins, both passing away a number of years ago. He leaves a widow, 4 sons, 1 stepson, 1 stepdaughter, 45 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, besides a large number of relatives and friends to lament his going away. He also reared in his home at different times, several of his grandchildren, and one boy from a NY orphanage, and also had for a time the care of his parents and Mrs. Benson’s mother. He was a member of the Mt. Carmel M.E. Church and served as one of its trustees for a number of years. He served as Justice of the Peace for a long period and as such was a member of the County Court before the present system came into usage. He was an uncle of Mrs. T.G. Farnsworth and Mrs. P. A. Poundstone of Buckhannon."
