A Scary Moment

One of my earliest memories occurred on a nice summer day in 1945. I was playing in my parents' front yard on the crest of a hill about three miles east of the Los Angeles City Hall when suddenly it seemed that every siren, horn, whistle and other noisemaker in the city went off simultaneously. The noise scared me so much that I began crying and ran inside the house to find my mom. I knew that our country had been at war with Japan and was afraid that the Japanese army was invading Los Angeles. My mom comforted me, and it wasn't long before we discovered that Japan had agreed to surrender. The war was over! That evening my dad didn't come home from work, and my mom called the wife of one of my dad's colleagues only to find that her husband hadn't come home either. My dad finally made it home late that night or the next day. We learned that he and his colleagues had gone to the nearby mountains to celebrate the end of the war, but in all of the excitement they had neglected to call their spouses.
