Robert (Botfish) Bodfish migrated to New England
during the Puritan Great Migration (1620-1640).
Robert Botfish (as he spelled his name during his lifetime), aka Bodfish,
was born about 1614, based on estimated date of marriage, origins unknown.
He emigrated in 1634, settling initially in Lynn, then to Sandwich, Massachusetts by 1639.[1]
He was made freeman 6 May 1635 as "Robte Bootefishe".[2]
1636-1644 served in a variety of capacities including jury,
surveyor of highways, petit jury and grand jury.
On 7 Jan 1638/9, "Robte Badfish" of Sandwich desired his freedom[3]
and took the oath of fidelity in 1639[4].
About 1639 he married Bridget, whose surname is unknown.
1640: Received five acres of upland and meadow.[5]
1643: among Sandwich men able to bear arms in Plymouth colony.[6]
He was "licensed to draw wine" in Sandwich in 1644.[7]
He signed his name as "Robert Botfish" 26 Feb 1647/8?[8] which also indicates he was literate.
He died 19 November 165_[9] likely after the 3 April 1651 birth of his last child,
Joseph, and before the 15 Dec 1657 second marriage of his widow to Samuel Hinckley.
He is buried in the Old Town Cemetery, Massachusetts.[citation needed]
