Origins

Robert Coker, son of Thomas Coker and his wife Jane Sutton, was born in about 1507 [1] and died 1572.

He was the brother of John Cocker and Alice (Coker) Bingham.

Marriage and Children

Robert married Elizabeth, the daughter and heir of Henry Beaumont of Giddesham (Gittesham), Devon, the couple had the following children (sons in order, followed by daughters in order as given in visitation.

  2. Thomas (He married Edith Tubervile)

  5. Luke
  6. Mary (She married Richard Watkyns)
  7. Alys (She married Thomas Mylle and according to her father's will appears to have later married ___ Cotton )
  8. Elizabeth (She married Gilbert Wellys)
  9. Susan Unmarried at the time of the visitation, her father's will mentions her marriage to John Clavell [2][3]

Inquisition Post Mortem

According to Hutchins, Robert was one of the most successful members of the Coker family and had increased his estate by judicious marriages and land purchases. His father had been involved in a very expensive law suit concerning the manor of Frome Whitfield, Robert settled that and bought the rest of the manor from Lord Delawarr, he also rebuilt the manor house .At his death in 1572 :

he was found to have been seised in demesne as of fee of this manor, held of Edith Hussey, widow, as of this manor of Armswell, by fealty, service, and rent of 6s 8d. Value 10l.; of the manors of Frome Whitfield, Frome Crouchen, and Eglisham; of the moietyof the advowson of the rectory of Mapouder; of three messuages, 1000 acres of land, meadow and pasture in Mapouder, Frome Whitfield, Frome Crouchen, Fordington, Stintesford [Stinsford], and Eglisham, value 11L.; lands in Sturminster Newton, late parcel of the abbey of Glaston, at the yearly rent of 2s. 6d, value 53s. 4d.; also of the manors of Hutton, value 51. 19s. 2d., of Rolleston, value11L. 17s. 8 1/2d., of Worle and Weston, value 17L 18s. 3d., of Huntspill, value 5L., and of the alternate presentation of -Hutton, all in Somersetshire: Henry his son and heir, forty-three years old.[5]
