Missing or death of Robert David Corrie, his wife and two of his younger children plus his crew of the trading cutter was reported in the Evening Post dated October/14/1915 stating they disappeared in May 1915 between Maiana Island and Tarawa Island in the Gilbert Islands. Ashburton Guardian, Canterbury, NZ, Volume XXXV, Issue 8269, 14th October 1915, Page 5. FATE OF A TRADER AND HIS FAMILY. "Island news states that a cutter belonging to R. Corrie, a well known Gilbert Islands trader, in which were his wife, two children and several natives has been missing since May 23. It is feared that the cutter drifted to sea and that the occupants have perished. The Gilbert Islands did not get full independence till 1979 then they were renamed Kiribati. Captain Edward Henry Meggs Davis was given the title of Deputy Commissioner for Western Pacific commanding the ship H.M.S Royalist. Davis approached Robert Corrie to be an interpreter because he was recommended by the High Commissioner in Fiji. Robert Corrie was considered well informed and educated, he held land which he lived on and a trading store business in Maiana Island, Gilbert Islands. He also spoke the native dialects, one of the few traders who could, he travelled around the Islands with Davis. Robert David Corrie was present and a signed witness of the Declaration of Protection of the Gilbert Islands on May/26/1892 on behalf of Queen Victoria. Reference is a digital copy of "Captain Davis Diaries". An extract of the book "The Coconut Trade of the Gilbert Islands" written as a British Government investigation of life after the Protectorate states Robert David Corrie of wild Maiana Island was building and running schools at his own expense and was offered the Governorship of Maiana by Tem Binoka the High Chief.
