About Robert Crew

PLEASE NOTE:

THIS IS 'IMMIGRANT ENGLISHMAN', ROBERT CREW (aka ROBIN) ... OUR NEWFOUNDLAND ANCESTRAL LINE. HE WAS BORN IN FONTMELL MAGNA, DORSET, ENGLAND ... NOT BUCKHORN WESTON, DORSET, ENGLAND AS FIRST BELIEVED. HIS PARENTS WERE JAMES CREW (Sr.) and DINAH (DIBBEN) CREW, BOTH OF FONTMELL MAGNA, DORSET, ENGLAND.

HIS ORIGINAL BIRTH DOCUMENTATION LISTED 'CHEW' AS THE SURNAME. I THOUGHT THIS WAS POSSIBLY A MISSPELLING AND CONTACTED 'FAMILY SEARCH'. AS PER ATTACHED, THE OFFICIAL DOCUMENT HAS NOW BEEN CORRECTED TO READ 'ROBERT CREW'. - J. Crewe

About 1815, Robert CREW (1797-1879) came out from Dorset to join 'cousin' George CREW. Robert (nicknamed ROBIN) married Mary LINTHORN (1797-1849) of Bonavista ... and stayed on in Newfoundland as George's neighbour.

In 1853, widower Immigrant Robert (always called Robin) married widow, Mrs.Sarah (born CREW) ABBOTT, a daughter of his first cousin Englishman George Crew, who also settled at Elliston; they had no children. Robert undoubtedly came out as a youngster to some merchant or planter in Bonavista. In time, Immigrant Robert became a planter, with a fishing room at Elliston, but in his elderly years he fell in debt to merchant Robert Tilly who took over the room in part payment and sold it out to the Immigrant's three sons, James, Samuel, & Jeremiah. When Samuel's sons moved out of Elliston his share was purchased by his nephew , Joseph, a son of George.
