Robert Gordon built up an estate in South Kanara formally Mysore State but died suddenly in 1890 leaving behind son, Harry Robert who was only 4 years old at the time. On Robert Gordon's death,there was no one to look after the estate, his widow Jemima being totally occupied with the task of bringing up the four children on her own and so , the Van Ingen family were asked to supervise the estates on behalf of the Gordon family. In a short while, and left to their resources, the floodgates were open to the Van Ingens to do as they pleased.There was much hostility shown to the heir of the estate, Harry Gordon. On coming of age, Harry Robert left the estates, never to return and barely ever spoke about the past at all.
