Biographical Notes:

Robert H. Gould, son of Judge James Gould and Sally Tracy Gould of Litchfield, Connecticut, was born March 28, 1818. In 1830 Robert studied at Sarah Pierce's Female Academy, as his siblings did as well. He later continued his education at Yale University, pursued theological studies, and studied law in Litchfield with his father. After completing his education he was appointed solicitor at the Supreme Court of Connecticut where his father was Judge. From 1841 until 1843 he served as Attache to the American Litigation in London, and in 1847 Robert left the United States permanently for London, where with the help of his brother George he became a member on the staff of Edward Everett, Minister to St. James's Court. In England, Robert led a busy political life and became with the Embassy, many times performing the duties of the acting Secretary of the Embassy. His high reputation was not only as a lawyer however, but also a linguist, author and speaker. He wrote "Pandects," a translation of J.E. Goudsmit's Dutch treatise on Roman law, which became very popular in England and America. Gould also contributed to the London Times, Daily News, and Standard. In 1861 Gould was sentenced to three years imprisonment for forgery in the Paris Court of Assizes. 1887 Gould removed from England, and set up his residence in Nelson, New Zealand where he served as Editor of the Nelson Mail.

During his time in London, Robert married Sarah Watkins. The couple had seven children. In 1870 he was wed to Sarah Davis, with whom he had two children. And his third marriage was to Elizabeth Page, who bore him three more children, and was widowed at their home in Nelson, New Zealand upon Robert's death in 1888, after he suffered from paralysis for three years.
