Robert Waldo Grice

According to family notes and letters --

Robert W was brilliant and self taught. He was a machinist at Brown and Sharp and a stationary engineer. He also drove cab, etc. And he worked for the railroad 1913 - 24.

RW started and ran a gas station-garage in East Taunton in 1926. Business was OK until 1929, but then the new road bypassed his garage. 1929 was also the beginning of the Great Depression.

Robert W then moved to Taunton and opened a new garage which he rented from the bank. The bank sold it out in 1938.

Robert also wrote poetry.

Robert W retired at 62 in 1953 and moved to Little Compton, Rhode Island.

Research notes --

In a Jan 1,1910 US Census Robert Waldo is 18 years old. He's living at home with his parents at 6 Quequechan St, Fall River, Massachusetts, and working as a clerk in a restaurant for wages [probably his father's fish and chips restaurant].

Then, on Oct 18, 1915, the newspaper "Fall River Record" reports that Robert W's father committed suicide. Robert W is working at "the roundhouse".

A birth record for son Stephen's birth on Feb 20, 1919, shows Robert W and family living at 393 Meridian St, Fall River, Mass

In the 1920 Census, Robert W is married and has a small family. The family is living at 351 Meridian St, Fall River. Robert W owns the house and has a mortgage. Robert is working as a salesman in a garage for wages.

In this census, Robert W's wife, Charlotte M, is 22. They have two sons: young Robert, age 2, and Steven [Stephen], age 10 months. Also in the household is RW's mother, Mary A. She is 69 and widowed.

Ten years later, in the 1930 Census, the Robert W Grice family has moved from Fall River to Taunton, MA, 293 Middleboro Ave. Robert W is now renting. And Robert W is working as an "auto repairer" in a garage [maybe his own garage]. Also in the household is wife Charlotte and 7 children, ranging from the oldest, Robert, age 12, to Ethel, age 1.
