This is the 1st generation of the Longshaw / Longshores move from Wigan, Lancashire, England - into the United States....

Robert was a Deputy-Surveyor for the Colony of Pennsylvania, a man of education. In early deeds for the colony, Robert Longshore styled himself as "Gentleman," a distinctive British title of social rank, which meant he was of the "Gentry" social class, either descended from a family that had the right to a coat-of-arms or he had himself been granted that right, and all other rights afforded to the British Gentry (such as, access to an education, potential access to military promotions, etc.). Only those individuals entitled to use the style of "gentleman" were legally allowed to do so. Robert likely descended from the "Longshaw" family of Wigan, Lancashire, England. The original surname spelling was "Longshaw," usually spelled as "Longshore" in America. (ref: "A Friendly Heritage Along the Delaware," by Arthur E. Bye, 1959; "Wilson and Allied Families," by Alfred R. Justice, 1929). Some genealogies credit "Thomas & Christian Longshaw" of Wigan, Lancashire, England as the parents of Robert Longshore, progenitor of the American Longshore family.

Robert Longshore's estate was administrated in 1695 & 1701 (ref: 1695 Philadelphia Co. Estate Adm. #87, Adm. Book A, p. 208, and 1701 Philadelphia Co. Estate Adm. #187, Adm. Book A, p. 350). Numerous deeds exist where he either acted as the surveyor, or purchased & sold land himself, details provided in cited references (Bye & Justice).
