About Robert Gaston Page

Robert G. Page ’41 died January 4, 2014, in Scottsdale, Ariz. He was born on December 4, 1919, in Fort Kent, and prepared for college at Stearns High School and Hebron Academy. A member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity at Bowdoin, he attended Tufts Medical School from 1941 to 1942. He served to lieutenant in the Navy as a PT boat skipper in the Solomon Islands during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. He began his career with American Time in Springfield, Mass., followed by a long tenure with General Electric, with assignments in Connecticut, New York, California, Ireland, and England. In 1951, he was awarded the General Electric Charles A. Coffin Award for outstanding contributions to circuit breaker design. In 1969, having achieved senior leadership and thirteen patents, he left GE and, after a brief time with General Instrument, became the president of Draper, a division of Rockwell International. From there he went to John Brown, where he was president of their Leesona textile and plastics manufacturing unit. He retired in 1985. In 1995, he went to the Czech Republic as a volunteer for the International Executive Service Corps, assisting a mining machinery manufacturing company to modernize. He was a long-time member of Eastward Ho! Country Club in Chatham, Mass., and The Boulders Golf Club in Carefree, Ariz., and he was a founder and first president of the Shannon Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland. He is survived by his wife of sixty-nine years, Florence Vandiver Page; son Tony; daughter Penny Spencer; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by all of his siblings: Simon, Roland, John, Rosairo, and Simone.

He leaves behind his bride of 69 ½ years Florence, his dog Hack, his son Tony Page of Scottsdale, AZ, daughter Penny Spencer of Cave Creek, AZ, two grandchildren Nicholas and Suzy Spencer of Phoenix, AZ as well as two great- grandchildren Giuliana and Johnny Spencer, a daughter in law Leasa Duvall Page, Michelle Spencer wife of Nicholas, Ethan Strickland companion of Suzy Spencer and a large number of nieces and nephews. The Red Sox 2013 World Series Championship team will forever be his family's favorite because like Pagie, they worked hard, improved the community and lives of others, had too much fun and ultimately achieved the ultimate success in their field of endeavor.


For 94 years Robert G. Page graced the planet earth with his presence. He retired from John Brown in 1985 having been the CEO of their Leesona in Warwick, Rhode Island. He graduated from Bowdoin College in 1941 and served in WWII as a decorated PT boat Skipper in the Solomon Islands. In 1944 he married his life long sweetheart Florence Vandiver. His business career started with American Time in Springfield, Massachusetts and then onto a long tenure with General Electric. In 1969 he became the President of Draper a division of Rockwell International in Hopedale, Massachusetts. In 1974 he joined Leesona as President until his 1985 retirement. After retirement he did pro bono work in the former Soviet Union and Ukraine helping companies convert from Command economies. He was born in Fort Kent, Maine the son of Dr. RJ Page and Alphonsine Long and from there traveled the world. He owned a house in Wellfleet, Massachusetts until 1994 when he moved to Carefree, Arizona. He was a long-time member of Eastward Ho! Country Club in Chatham, MA, The Boulders Golf Club in Carefree, AZ and was a founder and first president of the Shannon Golf Club in County Clare, Ireland.
