About Robert Rea

obert Rea was born about 1742. His parents are unknown. Perhaps his father was John, Abraham, Allen or James Rea. A James Rea was granted land in Culpeper County, Virginia, on two deeds both dated and recorded March 16, 1758. (Book C, Pages 108 and 110) Robert Rea settled in Virginia (probably in Winchester, Frederick County or Culpeper County) about the year 1760. One source thinks that the Reas came to America on the ship "Falcon" with the Skidmore family.

Robert Rea was married in Frederick County, Virginia, on December 2, 1765 (one source has February 12, 1765) to Rebecca Haines. Rebecca Haines was the daughter of Bethany and Mary Haines. Rebecca (Haines) Rea was born about 1744 in Frederick County (or Culpeper County), Virginia. Rebecca's father Bethany was from New Jersey but moved to Culpeper County, Virginia, in 1736 and was in Frederick County, Virginia, by 1747. The Robert Rea's were Quakers as were the Haines.

According to Quaker records (Crooked Run MM, Virginia) on "3 Jan 1807 Robert Rhea (sic) and Wife Rebekah (sic) (along with daughter Rebekah, Jr) granted certificate to Miami, Ohio, Monthly Meeting". According to the Quaker records (Miami, Ohio, MM) dated January 31, 1810, Robert Ray (Rhea) (sic) and wife Rebecca (along with daughter Rebeckah, Jr.) were received from Crooked Run, Virginia, MM on certificates dated 4 May 1805 and 3 Jan 1807. Robert Rea's daughter Hannah with her husband Thomas Garwood and their children had identical paperwork suggesting that they came to Ohio together. See pages 368-369 of the "Garwood Family" for a story on early life. Also see "Branches and Twigs" 1985, page 7 of the Logan County, Ohio Genealogical Society for early recollection of the Garwoods. ( ) Robert Rea/Ray came with his son Joseph Rea/Ray to Zane Township (now in Logan County) Ohio in 1806 (one source has 1803 which is probably wrong). (7)

John and Esther Garwood on January 14, 1809 sold 70 acres to Robert Rea as recorded in Vol. A, page 86-87, of the Champaign County, Ohio (this would be Logan County today) deed book. The land was described as follows: "Beginning at Levi Garwood Southerwardly corner at two beeches and ash and running south 52 degrees west 12 poles to a beech ironwood and white oak there south 38 degrees east 140 poles to 2 sugar trees and beech there north 52 degrees east 80 poles to 2 ash and sugar trees there 138 (sic, would have to be 38 to make beginning and end meet) west 140 poles to 2 beeches and Ironwood there south 52 degrees west 68 poles to the beginning containing 70 acres of land." Even today the property lines in Perry and Zane townships of Logan County, Ohio, aren't north and south but mostly 38 and 52 degrees. (116)

The 1809 and 1810 tax lists of Champaign County, Ohio, (Logan County, Ohio, wasn’t formed yet) has listed Robert Ray (sic). (38)
