father a farmer Oliphantskop when he was baptised;
he a General Dealer in Grahamstown, Hotel Keeper and Blacksmith. He moved to Johannesburg where they acquired land and a residence by the time of Rachel's untimely death. He must have moved back to the Cape after his wife's death even before the Boer War exodus of the Reef began as his eldest daughter died in 1897 in King Williamstown
