About Robert Stuart

Robert (4) Stuart, born Sept. 23, 1760, at Cane Creek, N.C., was only 6 yrs. old when his father (Alexander Stuart) died, and as his mother (Elizabeth Pike) remarried in 1768 to John Doane, it is presumed that Robert was reared in the Doane household. His fathers farm was his when he became 21: this farm lays two miles west of the Cane Creek meeting house and ajoined land of John Pike in Orange (now Alamance) county. Robert married Jan. 17, 1783, Ann Hornaday born Dec. 12, 1766. He was disowned July 5, 1783, by the Cane Creek Quaker monthly meeting. In 1789 he bought from Stephen Madden for f60 250 acres of land on Eno river, containing the headwaters of the west fork of that stream, in Orange county. Oct. 23, 1792, Robert and Ann Stuart sold to Stephen Ward for f160 - 67 1/2 acres of land lying on a branch of Cane Creek, "which was willed to Robert by his father, Alexander Stuart" in Orange county. In 1795 Robert bought from the state of N.C. 100 acres of land on the waters of Eno, joining his own land. He sold out about 1802, it is said, and removed to Waynesville, Warren co., Ohio, "prompted as were many thousands of others in the slave states by comparative poverty and hostlity to the institution of slavery." There he bought a farm between Waynesville and Freeport (now Oregonia). There Ann Hornaday Stuart died Aug. 1 1839, and Robert Stuart died July 21, 1844.
Robert is the oldest son of Alexander Stewart and Elizabeth Pike, and husband of Ann Hornaday.
It is believed that Robert and Ann were later moved to a different burial site from the farm.
The spelling of their name changes, it is said when they were Quakers the Stuart is preferred and when they left their name became Stewart. In Warren County, Ohio they helped to establish a Baptist church on or near their property.
