Source: "Descendants of Robert Weir and Elizabeth Green of Old Cambridge - White Creek Washington County, New York - Compiled by Jane C. Whitaker Robert Weir came to Boston around 1737/1739 at a time when a large migration of Scotch-Irish Presbyterians sailed from Belfast, Ireland, to North America. The emigres of Scotch descent living in the north of Ireland were not known in Ireland as Scotch-Irish; they preferred to be called Ulstermen. Nothing infuriated them more than to be called Irish. According to William F. Marshall in his book Ulster Sails West, "They were, they said with great indignation, people pf the Scottish nation in Ulster who had given their strength and substance and lives to uphold the British connection there, and it is hard, in this new land, [America] to be identified with the very people to whom they had always been opposed."
Ethel (Weir) Guptill, who was working on the Weir family ancestry in the 1950s, states in her notes that three Weir brothers came from Ireland to Boston. According to the Boston Commissioners Records, page 81, on 15 Sept 1737, 408 people came with Capt. Daniel Gibbs from Ireland, on the ship, "Sagamore," disembarking at the Port of Boston; among them was one John Weir. John Weir had to post a bond showing that he was able to support himself in this country. In the book Ships to America, an Abraham Weir arrived in Boston on 16 Nov. 1738 aboard the "Lyme." Could Robert Weir have been the third brother?
