About Robert? White of Somerset

Identified from an LDS infodump of "people named White". Probably the father of Thomas White of Somerset, although there was a William White in the same area at about the same time who was sued for trespassing and property damage (trampling the grass) in 1491.

William White of Wythecombe in Martock, sued for trespass, 6 Henry VII. (1491).

Roll 917: 142 —Trinity, 6 Henry VII. :— SOMERSET.

JOHN Luke, late of Whitcombe in the county aforesaid, husbandman, William White, late of Whitcombe in the county aforesaid, husbandman, and John Hadlegh, late of Whitcombe in the county aforesaid, gentilman, were attached to respond to Peter Courtnay of a plea wherefore they with force and arms the close of him the said Peter at Whitcombe did break and his grass to the value of one hundred shillings, there late growing, with divers cattle, which were there depastured did trample down and consume and in his soil did there dig, by which the said Peter the profits of his aforesaid soil for a long time did lose. And other enormities upon him did inflict to the great damage of his and the said Peter and against the peace of the Lord King that now is etc. And therefore the same Peter, by John Kyrton his attorney, doth complain that the aforesaid John, William and John the twentieth day of October in the year of the reign of the Lord King that now is the sixth, with force and arms, viz. with staves and knives, the close of him the said Peter at Whitcombe did break, and his grass to the value, etc., there late growing, which divers cattle, viz. with horses, oxen, cows, swine and sheep, which were there depastured, did trample down and consume, and in his soil, viz. in one half virgate of land there did, whereby the same Peter the profits of his soil aforesaid for a long time, viz., from the aforesaid twentieth day of October until the twentieth day of March then next following, did lose. And other enormities, etc. to the great damage, etc. and against the peace of the Lord King that now is, etc. Whereby he said that he is injured and hath damage to the value of twenty pounds. And therefore he bringeth suit, etc. And the aforesaid John, William and John by John Collyns, their attorney, came and defended, and say that they are in nowise guilty of the aforesaid trespass as the aforesaid Peter above complained against them. And concerning this they put themselves upon the country. And the aforesaid Peter likewise. Therefore precept to the Sheriff to cause them to come hither in the quinzanes of Michaelmas, etc."
