Robert Jnr:

By 1831 Robert was working for William Gravett.

28th July 1831 Robert "did wrongfully and unlawfully assault (here it gives the child's name) , an infant under the age of 10 years and her did violently and against her will, ravish and carnally know her." (So he was guilty of rape.)

October 1831 he was condemned to be hanged.

January 1832 his sentence was commuted to transportation for 14 years.

1835 the inhabitants of Graham's Town also submitted a petition, which was unsuccessful.

Robert remained in custody in Cape Town until the Earl Grey** convict ship passed the Cape on her way to Australia. He spent ten years in Australia as his four years in prison were taken into account.

How Robert returned to the Cape is not known - where did he get the funds from?

Certificate of Freedom granted 24 July 1846 (Australian Government Archives)

  • March 1847 Robert staying at John Phillip's house at Fish River Mouth. August 1847 Robert doing carrying business. August 1847 Robert has a span of oxen taken near Drivers Hill. April 1850 Robert with William Surman has leased Pigot Park from Catherine Pigot.*
  • to * from NAAIRS.

1848 Pigot Park was purchased from Catherine Pigot by William Wicks, so it would seem likely that Robert and William were leasing from Robert's younger brother.

Nothing more is heard of Robert after this that can be verified.

1882 a J W Kewley requests admittance for a Robert Wicks to Somerset Hospital. There is nothing to confirm that this is the above Robert Wicks.
