Death.—Shortly after eleven o'clock last night one of our oldest residents, in the person of Mr. Robert Yuille, joined the great majority after a severe and lingering illness, extending over many years. The deceased gentleman who had passed the ripe age of 70, has been the victim of a complication of diseases for some time past, and although receiving every care and attention from those near and dear to him, it was found necessary to have him removed to the hospital where he could be more carefully attended to by Dr. Adam. He was admitted to the institution on Wednesday last, and passed away peacefully at the hour named. Deceased was a brother of Mr. Yuile, the well-known auctioneer of Kirk's Bazaar, Melbourne.

ARCHIBALD YUILLE AND BALLARAT - TO THE EDITOR OF THE ARGUS

Sir,-Mr. Spielvogel and Mr. Schuchard,

I while sharing the common belief, both err in referring to Archibald Buchanan Yuille and William Cross Yuille as brothers. The two were first cousins, each being a grandson of George Yuille, of Darleith, Archibald Buchanan being the second son of George Murdoch Yuille, and William Cross being a son of Robert Yuille. William Cross had a brother, Robert, who was at one time with him in Port Phillip, but the two brothers quarreled and parted. This may have some bearing on the fact that Archibald Buchanan and William Cross have hitherto always been spoken of as brothers.

It might be Inferred from Mr. Schuchard's letter that the two cousins arrived in Port Phillip direct from Scotland in February, 1837; but whereas as to Archi- bald Buchanan I have no Information, William Cross certainly landed at Point Henry, near Geelong, in that month, bringing with him a flock of merino sheep from Hobart Town, where he had landed in December, 1836.

Mr. Schuchard states that a daughter of J. O. Denny was wedded to Archibald Yuille, Jun" but this is not correct. Mary, the daughter of J. O. Denny, was married to William Cross Yuille, and was thus the mother of Archibald Yuille, Jun., who married Annie, daughter of David Denny, he being a cousin of Mary Denny.

It is interesting to observe that when the two cousins settled at Ballarat, Archi- bald Buchanan was 26 years of age, and William Cross only 19. Archibald Buchanan returned to Scotland before 1857, in which year he was married, and he never again visited Australia. William Cross, on the other hand, though be made several visits to England, where some of his family were born, continued to reside in Victoria, and died at East Melbourne on July 19, 1894.

I have always understood that, of the two, William Cross was the first to camp at Ballarat, and that Archibald Buchanan went with him on the second occasion and they then settled there. I would be pleased to hear from any person who is able to throw further light on this aspect. I am also particularly anxious to receive Information as to the exact position of the first camp near the Black Swamp.

-Yours, &c, J. B. YUILLE.

Kew, July 10.
