About Robert de Sablé, III
"Robert III de Sablé , Lord of Sablé .
Biography
Lisiard 's son had been brought up with Foulque V of Anjou , said the younger, to whom he was a foster brother, which earned him the friendship and constant indulgence of Count Geoffroi, despite his many revolts. He had taken part in his father's struggle against Geoffroy Plantagenet , who restored the land of La Suze to him immediately after his father's death. But pushed by the advice of Hugues de Mathefelon and Thibault , his son, he carried the devastation from Briollay to Angers , from Suze and Sablé to Le Mans , the year of the death of King Henry I.of England ( 1135 ). Geoffroi defeated him, took the Suze again and Robert had to resort to the intercession of Ulger , bishop of Angers , and Hugh of Saint-Calais , bishop of Le Mans , and again pay liege homage to the victor to obtain this second peace.
A few years later, in 1144 , assisted by Elie, Geoffrey's own son, and by most of the Angevin barons, he started the war again. The count thought it prudent to protect his lands by building on the Sarthe , between Sablé and Angers, a fortress which he named the Châteauneuf . His troops, repulsed at first, returned in greater numbers and the Sabolians had to flee to their walls. Robert again implored peace, which he obtained from the magnanimous prince, who was also worried about the turn his affairs were taking in England. The Chronicle of Anjou reports this peace in 1146 , pax fit inter barones and comitem .

Despite all his wars, Robert III thought of confirming the generosity of his ancestors to Marmoutier . He was one of the benefactors of the hospital of Angers. He confirmed to Saint-Nicolas de Sablé the tithes of the clearings of the forest of Brion , the day that Geoffroi, bishop of Angers, consecrated the church of Saint-Denis-d'Anjou ( Gilles Ménage dit: Geoffroi, évêque du Mans , dedicating the church of Angon).
The main foundation of Robert III was that of the Abbey of Bellebranche which he gave to the Cistercians . It is said that an attempt at a religious foundation took place there in 1098 1 . Robert's foundation is dated 1152 , and can be regarded as one of his acts in extremis."
