Research notes
Note: The Kirk tradition is that Dr. Robert Church left England to engage in the Scottish war of 1556. the name was changed to the Scots name Kirk (church). Although no definite historical proof has been presented to sustain the tradition, it has not been disputed and in all probability may be true.
Robert Kirk (Church) has a son Thomas, who had a son named Alphonsus. Alphonsus had three sons, Roger, Robert and Timothy who returned to England in 1631 retaining the name Kirk.
Roger was very probably the one named as the first in our genealogical history as dates could agree with ours. Roger and his wife Elizabeth dwelt in Neshag in the parish of Skelton and in the county of York. They moved to Tollygally near Lurgan, County of Ardmagh in Ireland in 1658. Our forefather, Alphonsus was probably born there.
Wife
No birth or marriage record located. No record of maiden name. Elizabeth was probably born in or near Yorkshire. Parents are believed to be Nathaniel Richards and Mary (Mason) Richards born in Ireland. Nathaniel's father was Edward Richards. Mary's parents were Richard Mason and Abigail. But this identification seems a mixup with the Elizabeth Richards who married Roger Kirk, son of Alphonsus (her grandson).
She is seen as Elizabeth Duck and mixed up with Harlan’s wife as a result, but they were different people.
