Orderic Vitalis records that he was appointed heir by his cousin Guillaume de Breteuil and his uncle Guillaume Comte d'Evreux, as part of the arrangements for ending the [1090/90] war between his father and Guillaume Comte d'Evreux which had been triggered by the enmity between their wives[2162].
