About Rosa Elsberg

Ilse Vogel, Schmidt, 2007

"Two daughters [of Hirsch Erlanger and Pauline Birgstein Erlanger] married in Neustadt: Antonia in 1897 to the engineer and reserve lieutenant Julius Rosenthal from Cannstadt, and Rosa to the general practitioner Dr. Berhard Elsberg from the Nave of Bremerhaven, but was soon divorced. The sons Theodor, Arthur, and Ludwig attended the Realschule between 1893 and 1900, and after the death of their father [February 1, 1903], they took over the business line." -- "From the Country ... In the City: 200 years of Jewry in Pahres and 70 Years of Jewish Life in Neustadt; A Contribution to Local History" by Ilse Vogel (Schmidt, 2007).

Rosa's divorce (for which this source provides no dates) would have been uncommon in the family, where marriages tended to be permanent, despite instances of incompatibility. Bernard died in 1925.

In 1933, my mother's Aunt Rosa Erlanger Elsberg, then 54 years old and living as a widow or single woman, accompanied my mother Liselotte Erlanger, then 18 years old, to America when they first fled from the Nazis; their visa was vouched for by Rosa's brother (Liselotte's uncle) Arthur Erlanger, who lived in New York City. Lilo told me that her papers "were not in order" and she had to return to Europe. She again came to America in 1938 -- catherine yronwode
