Rosalia Velarde was the mother-in-law of Manuel Francisco Delgado, the founder of the Delgado family of New Mexico. Here I try to do clear up some things about the Perez Velarde, Valverde y Cosio and the Velarde Cosio families in 18th century El Paso. I synthesize information on José Esquibel's site (JE) and add some more from various different sources: Archivos de Indias in Seville, the book by Magdaleno (AM), the Mormon site….Enough facts are available to distinguish the families, although there could be anterior connections between them.

According to the great New Mexico data base an Antonio Velarde y Cosio died on December 15, 1728 in El Paso. His mother was Juana de Velarde y Cosio and his father Antonio Velarde. It further has this person's daughter as Juana de Velarde y Cosio who married Juan Antonio Perez Velarde and whose son Manuel Velarde de Cosio married Lugarda Lucero de Godoy. They had Rosalia who married José Garcia de Noriega, whose daughter Maria Josefa married Manuel Francisco Delgado.

If there is a document that says that Rosalia Velarde's parents were Manuel and Lugarda Velarde Cosio, I would interpret this to mean 1) not the son of Juan Antonio Perez Velarde and Juana Valverde y Cosio. All their children were to have died as children and none of them were called Manuel. 2) not Manuel Blas Perez Velarde, son of Juan Antonio Perez Velarde and Jacinta Valencia. He married Casilda de Ydalgo, daughter of Juan Ydalgo and Antonia de Herrera in 1757. Casilda was about exactly Rosalia's age. Perez Velarde's children basically went by Perez Velarde, Velarde or Perez, but didn't use Cosio in their names. 3) probably Manuel Lorenzo Velarde Cosio (died 1754) who married Maria Lugarda de Herrera del Villar (died 1775).

I also think that if there is really a document saying that an Antonio Velarde y Cosio died on December 15, 1728 in El Paso, whose mother was Juana de Velarde y Cosio and his father Antonio Velarde, that this could be one of Juana Valverde y Cosio's and Antonio Velarde's children who died. I doubt that it is Juana's father.
