Note: Grandma was a dominating women, she was always afraid of dieing in proverty. Having a harsh childhood and always short of money, the family sewed clothing for additional money. When her father died her mother applied for ggfather's Civil War pension, she finialy got $7.00 a month. Grandma attended the Orchard Academy in Flora, Illinois. She taught in one room schoolhouse east of Clay City. In the 30's during the depression I remember going south of Clay City and looking at the old Taylor farm, which was for sale. My dad and granddad were very emphatic that they did not want to farm. A few years later Pure Oil Co. drilled oil on the property and was a heavy producer of oil and gas. Grandma, being an enterprizing lady. Converted the smoke house into rental property, rented sleeping rooms and built two small houses. She wore the britches in the family. By Donald R. Taylor
