Dr. Rose-Andree Feuchtwanger – 90 – formerly of Hornell, died Thursday afternoon (November 4, 2010) at the Steuben County Health Care facility where she has resided for the past 2 years.

Born in the South of France on June 25, 1920, she was raised in the suburbs of Paris and was the daughter of Edouard & Anne (Noffke) Picamilh.

She studied in Paris and in 1939, at the age of 19, was married to Klaus Feuchtwanger. In 1940 they moved to the United States and lived for about 3 years in Manhattan and later settled on Long Island. For about 10 years she and her husband owned and operated their own business making wallet inserts.

When she was in her mid-30’s, she and her husband moved to Switzerland where they completed pre-med and then medical school earning their degrees in psychiatry. While in Switzerland, Dr. Rose Feuchtwanger worked at a hospital and in 1962 they returned to the USA, settling once again on Long Island. They both worked at Central Islip State Hospital for about a year and a half and in 1963 they moved to Upstate New York and began working at Willard State Hospital.

In 1970, Dr. Rose began her 30 year association with St. James Mercy Hospital in Hornell. Her husband, Dr. Klaus, established the Psychiatry Unit at St. James in 1971. Dr. Rose was associated with Craig Development Center of Groveland for about 2 years (1973 – 1975) and from 1979 – 1993 served as staff psychiatrist and later medical director of the Aquinas Center in Hornell, while maintaining her position with St. James Hospital. She retired in 2000.

Dr. Rose Feuchtwanger was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Klaus Feuchtwanger who died in 1982. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Henrietta Garcia and her brother, Paul Picamilh.

Surviving are her daughter, Dr. Michele (Dr. Rolf) Adler of Bern, Switzerland; 5 grandchildren, Dr. Monique Aurora of England, Corinne Sonderegger of Switzerland, Joel Adler of Switzerland, Benjamin Adler of Switzerland and Raoul Adler of Switzerland; several great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Claude Picamilh of France; her dear friends, Ellen & Stephanie Stephens.
