About Rose Lee Hundley
John H. Hundley had been married to Sarah "Betty" Murray for just about two weeks, when the newborn baby, Rose Lee, was left in a basket on their doorstep. John always claimed to be Rosie's father and always supported her. Her mother was a woman named Catherine (said to be a woman of “ill-repute”), whose mother was named Martha. Betty left John and went to her parents' home. Her father told her that she needed to go back home to John - that she had made her bed and would have to lie in it. John and Betty raised Rosie for some time, along with children of their own-it is said that Rosie was treated differently than John & Betty's natural children. For instance, once Betty made Rosie break a piece of splitrail fence over her knee. John's parents, Kenneth & Angeline Hundley, raised Rosie for awhile.
Rosa is listed as oldest “daughter” but not oldest child.
John & Betty also took in foster children to help them with the five large farms they owned.
Rosie married/divorced Logan, then married/divorced him again. I don't know the date for the other marriage or the divorce or which births occurred during the 1st and 2nd marriages. The two marriages and divorce apparently all happened between 1911 and 1915.
Rosie & Logan had 6 kids, but only the last child, born Logan (Jr.) [adoptive father changed his name to Curt Arthurs (Sr.)] survived childhood. [Caused by an Rh-negative blood conflict. Curt, Sr. had negative blood. The other babies must have had Rh positive blood, so Rose’s body made antibodies to attack them as foreign. The first baby lived a few years or so, because the antibodies hadn’t built up too strongly yet.]
The “pauper” designation of the cemetery where she was buried was later removed.
- Elizabeth Combs was the mother of Kenneth Hundley, who was the father of both John H. and George Hundley.
- John had just been married to Sarah Elizabeth Murray a short time (late 1891-early 1892) when a woman named Catherine (said to be of "ill-repute") gave birth to his baby girl, Rose Lee (Oct. or Nov. 1891)
- George married Lulie Releford in 1894. The 1900 census below shows three children born to them, in 1892-1897.
- In 1900, George has been divorced or widowed, left with three kids. Sometime between 1897 and 1900, he married Catherine, the mother of John's baby, and together they were raising Rose, along with his kids by Lulie. (note: Rose, age 8, is listed AFTER the youngest child.
- HUNDLEY, GEORGE (27) CATHERINE (28) Tillie (7)(1892) Claiborn (4)(1896) & Mattie (2)(1897) (note: mother was Lulie Releford) *ROSA (8)(1891) and ELIZABETH COMBS (86)(1813)(George's) grandmother]
[note: Beatrice P. Meek, in a correspondence from1990, said his parents were Spencer & Julia A. Hundley] This is not in agreement with this 1900 census that names his grandmother as Elizabeth Combs]
