Petry describes her early interest in aviation as well as her father's work as a zoologist at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, where Petry completed her education. Spurred on by her father's and brother's interest in aviation, Petry describes her persistence, which resulted in her being allowed to participate in the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP) after her graduation from Cornell. With 240 flight hours, Petry was accepted into the WASP program where it became obvious she had previously been a Link instructor, since she had no trouble flying with instruments. After graduation from WASP training at Avenger Field in Sweetwater, Texas, Petry was assigned to Courtland Army Air Base in Selma, Alabama, where she served as WASP commanding officer. Shortly before the deactivation of the WASP on December 20, 1944, Petry served at Maxwell Field. Petry goes on to describe her antics in airplanes as a young pilot and her continued work in aviation after deactivation.
