Ruth A. Nicholas was born in Leeds County, Canada on March 7, 1825 and was the 8th child of a family of 13 children. Her parents were New England people, moving to Canada several years before the subject of this sketch was born. At the age of 17, she with her brother, Jonas, J. Nichols and 2 sisters, came to the territory of Wisconsin, making the trip overland by team and settled near Sun Prairie, where her parents had preceded her. She was married to David Wilder on October 23, 1844 and went to housekeeping in the township of Sun Prairie but soon removed to the township of Bristol, where they lived until the year 1877, when they removed to the village of Sun Prairie. In October of 1894 they celebrated their golden wedding, all of their children being present. On January 18, 1896 the husband was taken away by death and on November 29, 1897, Helen, the eldest daughter, died and it was then the home was broken up and the widow and mother went to live with her daughter in Chicago where she died. She was a devoted wife and mother, laboring for the welfare of her family and those about her. She was converted at the age of 14 and was an earnest, consistent Christian, a great Bible reader, and one who was deeply interested in the advancement of the church, having been a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church for nearly 40 years. She leaves 3 sons and 3 daughters, Howard N. of Fort Dodge, IA, Ezbon W. of Austin, MN, Mrs. Hattie R. Waddell of Jennings, LA, Mrs. Pheoba J. Moak of Leavenworth, KS, George W. and Mrs. Carrie E. of Chicago, besides two sisters, Mrs. Lucy Robinson of Chicago and Mrs. Bulah Wakeman of Marshall, WI to mourn her loss. Funeral services were held at her home in Chicago on Monday afternoon, conducted by Dr. W. O. Shepard, pastor of First M. E. Church of Englewood and Dr. E. M. Randall and her remains were laid to rest at her old home in Sun Prairie on Tuesday afternoon. And thus another of the pioneers of Wisconsin has gone to her reward.
