About Salomon Lewin

SALOMON LEWIN [LOWIN] [LOWY] [LEWINAU], b. 1751, aka “SALOMON HIRSCH”, aka “SALOMON HIRSCH LEWIN”, aka “SALOMO HEIMAN LEVINAU”, aka “SALOMON HEIMAN LEWINAU”, was the son of Herschel [Heimann] Lewin. When Salomon Lewin witnessed the Horn-Honig marriage (2 Dec 1788), he is listed as Salomon Hirsch Levin. In Goldschmied's history, he is called "Salomo Helman [or Heiman] Levinau." Salomon Lewin [Lowy] was married to Ester [Estera] Spitzer (1762-1812), the daughter of Elkan and Rosel Spitzer. Ester Lewin d. in household #16, 16 May 1812, age 50.

According to geni.com, however, Salomon Lewin had a first wife, the daughter of Isak Lob Fuhrmann. She is said to have been the mother of his three oldest children, Rachl (b. 1778), Herschel (1781-1867) and Judith (b. c1783). Her first name may have been Hindl [aka Johanna].

Salomon Lewin, age 58, d. household #50, 6 Oct 1809.

Salomon Lewin is mentioned several times in Goldschmied's summary on the history of the Jews in Prossnitz. Note this passage: “Geschichte Der Juden In Prossnitz”, by Dr. Leopold Goldschmied, Prossnitz, footnote, p. 503 -- “Der Briefwechsel mitgeteilt zwischen Moses Sofer und dem Vorsteher Salomon Lewinau.

English translation: “The correspondence between Moses Sofer and the headmaster Salomon Lewinau. It is not only the high esteem which the chief of the rabbi is opposed to, but also that there was a great party in Prossnitz, which consisted of the choice of Moshe Sofer under all circumstances. Mosche Sofer sees himself bound by his promise to the municipality of Mattersdorf. Although the two communities cannot be compared with each other, he wants to keep his promise and go to Mattersdorf. But Salomon Helman Levinau [*probably a typographical error for Salomon Heiman Levinau], the father-in-law of the Zweig family, does not give up the hope that Moshe Sofer will yield to the impetus and will choose Prossnitz.”

Please note: Salomon Lewin was not the “father-in-law” of the Zweig family, but rather, the brother-in-law. His second wife, Ester (Spitzer) Lewin (1762-1812), was the sister of Elka (Spitzer) Zweig (1756-1817), wife of Moses Zweig (1750-1840).
