About Samuel Branch

Samuel Branch

The following information was found on the website Find A Grave.com: Samuel Branch was born in Charles City, Virginia, in 1663, and died in Henrico County, Virginia, in 1700. His father was Christopher Branch born in 1627 in Virginia, and his mother was Sarah Almond. Samuel married Ursula Goode who was born in about 1670 in Henrico County, Virginia. They were married sometime after 1683 in Henrico County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Col. John Goode, born about 1630 in England and Anne Bennet born about 1655 in Holland.

They had 3 children:

1.) Ursula Goode, born about 1690 in Virginia, died before October 17, 1768, in Chesterfield County, Virginia. She married about 1709, William Trent who was born in 1684 in Henrico County, Virginia.

They had the following children:

  • Lucy Trent born about 1712 in Henrico County, Virginia
  • William Trent born about 1715
  • Benjamin Trent born about 1717 in Henrico County, Virginia
  • Henry Trent born 1719 in Henrico County, Virginia
  • Alexander Trent born 1726 in Henrico County, Virginia

2.) Samuel Branch, born about 1695 3.) Martha Branch, born about 1700

The following information was found on the website Ancestry.com:

1683: The "Adventurers of Purse and Person" says an Ursula married Samuel Branch who was born about 1663 died before 1700 son of Christopher and Sarah Almond (marriage is also given in "Some, Virginia Marriages") and they had a daughter Ursula in 1691.

1691: In Court, Samuel Branch was deposed on June 6, 1691 and stated he was 28. He died at approximately 37 years old as evidences by his will written and recorded May 3, 1700, probate August 1, 1700, Henrico County, Virginia, mentions wife Ursula, son Samuel (under 21), daughters, Martha and Ursula (under 21 and unmarried) whose inheritance will be at age 21 for Samuel and age 21 or day of marriage for Martha and Ursula. No mention is made of the son Christopher mentioned in Branchiana.

The will of Samuel Branch, father of Ursula, Varina Parish, Henrico County, Virginia dated 3 May 1700, probated 1 Aug 1700, as far as age is concerned, says Samuel when he arrives at age of twenty one; Martha on day of marriage or age of twenty one; [wording from original] "Item. I give and bequeath to my Daughter Ursula Branch ye next living child which my Indian woman Judith Shall or may here after bear or __ __ in case my said woman shall or may bear no more children. Also one cow & four sows to be delivered to her at ye age of twenty one years or day of marriage."

(So we know Ursula was born, under 21 years of age, and not married when her father wrote his will.)

1707: after Samuel died Ursula (Goode) Branch married 2nd husband Walter Scott by 1707, as she was referred to in court records as "married to Walter Scott of Henrico County" . . . "and late of Samuel Branch"...1707 Source: Henrico Orphans Court, Book 1677-1739, Page 50

1709: Ursilla Branch was under 21 when her father died in 1700. Based on court records, Ursilla would have been 17 or 18 in 1709, the year William and Ursilla Trent were probably married.

Ursillah, wife of Willaim Trent, relinquished her dower right according to Henrico County, Virginia Court Orders 1737-1744, page 89 1 Jul 1745.

1724: William Trent of Henrico County sold to Stephen Watkins of Goochland County, for 41 pounds, 218 acres, on West side of Trabues branch, joining main branch of Tomahawk creek; being part of 400 acres granted to Francis Flournoy on 9 Jul 1724 and deeded by him to said Trent.

1739 Sep: William Trent by Deed to Francis Flournoy. Ursillah, wife of William Trent, relinquished her dower right. Source: Henrico County, Virginia Court Orders 1737-1744, page 89)

1745: July 1, William Trent of Henrico County sells to Stephen Watkins of Goochland County, for 41 pounds, 218 acres on West side of Trabues branch, joining main branch of Tomahawk Creek; being part of 400 acres granted to Francis Flournoy on 9 Jul 1724 and deeded by him to said Trent.

Witnesses: Richard Dean, Jeremiah Hatcher, Charles Ballow

Signed: William (X) Trent, Ursilla (X) Trent.

Recorded 1st Monday July 1745

No marriage nor will records prove Ursilla's maiden name. Based on indirect evidence, she may have been Ursilla Branch, daughter of Samuel Branch.

Barbara R. Marsh, a descendant of William Trent, believes Ursula is the daughter of Samuel Branch and notes that the Branches and Trents were already closely associated by marriage.

William Trent's aunt, Ann Sherman, married Ursilla's uncle, Christopher Branch. William Trent's brother, Henry, married Edith Harris, Ursilla's first cousin once-removed, Another of William's brother, Alexander, married Obedience Branch, Ursilla's first cousin.

Spelling of Ursula/Ursillah: As with names of other ancestors, we find different spelling due to the clerks who wrote the records. The name Ursula will be used as it is the spelling that appears most often.

Source of compiled notes is John Russell.
