About Samuel Cunliffe-Lister, 1st Baron Masham

Samuel Cunliffe-Lister, 1st Baron Masham, was an English inventor and industrialist, who was the patentee of many inventions, among others the compressed air brake for railways and the wool combing machine. He was notable for inventing the Lister nip comb, which separated and straightened raw wool, which has to be done before it can be spun into worsted yarn. This revolutionized the industry.

In 1891, he was made a peer as 1st Baron Masham, based on the little Yorkshire town close to which is Swinton Park, that he purchased in 1888 and where he died.

He was named (1st) Baron Masham by Queen Victoria (1837–1901) which was announced in The London Gazette, no. 126182, p. 3721, July 14, 1891:

Whitehall, July 13,.1831. .' , : . THE Queen has been pleased to direct Letter Patent to be passed under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, granting the dignity of a Baron of the said United Kingdom unto Samuel Curiliffe Lister, Esq., and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style, and title of Baron Masham, of Swinton, in the county of York.

His son Samuel Cunliffe-Lister inherited the title as 2nd Baron Masham in 1906. Since he never married, the title of 3rd Baron passed to his brother John Cunliffe Lister. This creation became extinct upon the John's death in 1924.

His death was noted in an USA newspaper at Plymouth, Indiana, as well as Australia at Sydney, Perth, and Adelaide.
