About Capt. Samuel E. Day

1. Samuel's son Herbert's death certificate lists his father's birth place as Norton, MA. His son Charles' death certificate lists his father's birth place as Medway, MA. His son Billings death certificate lists his father's birth place as Mansfield, MA. All military records show Samuel as being from Mansfield, MA.

2. Massachusetts Revolutionary War muster records show Samuel Day, from Mansfield MA, enlisted as a Private in the 7th company of the Bristol County regiment, under Capt. Samuel White, in April, 1775, "which marched on the alarm of April 19, 1775 from Mansfield to Roxbury."
Subsequent muster records show him serving in Capt. Moses Knapp's company.
3. January 1778 muster records show him still serving under Capt. Moses Knapp, by then with the rank of Corporal.
4. February 1780 muster records describe him as re-enlisting subsequent to Sept.1779 as part of Col. Wm. Shepard's regiment, and being 22 yrs old, 5'7" tall, fair skinned with light hair, from Mansfield. He is noted as having been"promoted", probably to Sergeant.
5. December 1780 muster records show him promoted to "Ensign", which was the lowest rank of commissioned officer in the Continental Army, and note that his previous rank was Sergeant. He was still serving under Col Wm. Shepard.
6. Although no further muster records are found as yet showing his promotion to Captain, by the end of his military service he was apparently a captain, as documented on his marriage record in 1794 and his death record in 1812.
