About Samuel Griscom
Samuel Griscom (grandson of Andrew), was a builder and owner of a lumberyard in Philadelphia. He assisted in the building of Independence Hall and other important buildings. His name is engraved on a plaque at Carpenter's Hall in Philadelphia.
Samuel helped build the bell tower at the Pennsylvania State House (Independence Hall). He married Rebecca James who was a member of a prominent Quaker merchant family. It was not unusual for people in those days to have many children, so it is only somewhat surprising to learn that they had 17!
Helped build the bell tower at the PA State House (Independence Hall).
death
In 1793, Betsy Ross' mother, father, and sister Deborah Griscom Bolton (1743–93) all died in another severe yellow fever epidemic (a disease unknowingly caused by infected mosquitoes that in those times ranged further north from the sub-tropical zones of the southern U.S.).
