About Samuel Lee
Additional Curator's Notes:
CAUTION - A recently found source proves that Samuel Lee cannot be the son of the William Lee who was descended from Richard Lee the Immigrant. The claims of relationship were disproved by Y-DNA studies. See this site - http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/cumberland/bios/lee02.txt. Samuel Lee's life is well documented once he reached adulthood. A William Lee appears on several documents. At this stage, we cannot determine Samuel's relationship to William, but believe he is the father.
As the Curator for this profile, I have opted to leave the biographical data on the Overview and to leave William Lee as the father, but to sever the relationship to Charles Lee and Ann Dabbs, to sever the marriage of William to Catherine Graves, and to remove any siblings that prove not to be related to Samuel. Definitely more research is needed to find the ancestry of this Samuel Lee. Maria Edmonds-Zediker, Volunteer Curator, 10/20/2011.
Samuel Lee was the son of William Lee and wife Catherine Graves. He was born in Richmond, Virginia on April 26, 1763. He died c.1844 in Washington Co., Indiana. He married (1) Olive Willis and (2) Mary Margaret Mitchell and was the father of seven children. He fought in the Revolutionary War and qualified for a pension for his service.
Samuel had moved to Hardy Co. VA by 1788 and then to Mercer Co. KY by 1797. The trip would have been made in a Conestoga Wagon filled with farm implements, tools, and provisions. A cow usually trailed behind the wagon. It was probably in Mercer County that he met Olive Willis and they married on July 15, 1798 in Mercer Co., Kentucky. They appear on the 1810 Census with a family of 3 sons and 3 daughters.
First wife Olive Willis was the daughter of Joseph Willis and wife Hannah, who had settled in Mercer County after the Revolutionary War. Olive passed away in 1812 when she was 37, leaving seven children.
Samuel needed help raising his children and he married Mary Margaret Mitchell on January 15, 1813 in Mercer Co., Kentucky. By 1834 Samuel had moved to Spencer Co. KY and then on to Indiana some time before 1840. He appears on the 1840 Census Vernon Township, Washington County, Indiana page 157. Next door was listed Samuel Lee (probably his youngest son), age 30-40 with a female age 20-30, so we can guess that Samuel Jr. married.
Samuel applied for his Revolutionary War Pension payments in 1834 from Washington Co. Indiana. He died there c. 1844.
