About Samuel Maiden

GEDCOM Note

<p>Samuel MAIDEN and his wife Elizabeth (nee LANGFORD) were married circa 1840 in England and in 1854 they emigrated to Australia on the ship the "Royal Charlie", arriving firstly in South Australia where they stayed for 2 years before they travelled up the river to settle in Menindee NSW where they ran the hotel called "Maiden's Hotel" at Menindee.

Family always uses spelling MAIDEN -but have seen an early record once as MEADON - no longer used as a variation in family.

On the voyage to Australia in 1854 Samuel MAIDEN and his wife Elizabeth (nee LANGFORD) were accompanied by their children :

Elizabeth Fanny (1842-1919) married Henry GILLETT, she died in Cobar NSW
Sarah Langford (1844-1910) married Henry or Harry PRETTY, she died in Menindee NSW
William MAIDEN (1848-1930) married Margaret WHITE, he died at Menindee NSW
George MAIDEN (1852-1940) - not certain if he married Sarah WHITE or not. He died at Menindee NSW.
Charles MAIDEN (cir 1853/4-1930) he married Elizabeth BURNS and a wonderful book by Geoffrey MANNING has been written about his family.

Once in South Australia the following two girls were born:
Annie Martha (cir 1856-1938) died in Mildura Victoria.
Eleanor (1857 to possibly after 1910) she married Werribee PYKE and she may have died in Queensland - this line seems to have sunk without trace.

Then two more daughters were born in Menindee NSW. They were:
Mary Ellen/Eliza (1862- ?? ) she married William BURNS in NSW
Alice (1865 to some time before 1930) she married William DAWES. This line is elusive but may have gone to Queensland</p> <p>ALL ABOVE from Ancestry.com page found on web when searching Harry Pretty.</p>

Samuel worked as a sawyer at nearby stations including Kinchega where he is recorded as an employee and did not run the Maiden's Hotel.</p> <p>"Family always uses spelling MAIDEN - but have seen an early record once as MEADON - no longer used as a variation in family."
