Samuel Mansell, son of George Mansell & Sarah (Garrett) Norwood, was born December 04, 1715 in St. Anne's Parish, Anne Arundel County, Maryland. St. Anne's Parish, also known as Middle Neck Parish, included the land between the South River and Severn River. It is located today in the center of Church Circle in Annapolis. He lived his entire life there, and died June 06, 1779.

The family probably lived near Annapolis, at the mouth of the Severn River, on the western shores of Chesapeake Bay. Puritans settled the area in 1649 when Queen Ann gave it a charter. About 1745, Samuel married Eleanor "Susanna" Gassaway, daughter of Nicholas Gassaway and Elizabeth Hawkins in Anne Arundel County. They had 11 children.

Samuel, and his youngest son, George, were among 900 men who signed the Oath of Fidelity to Maryland during the Revolution, [1] Friction between the British government and its colonies had been developing gradually for more than 10 years. The war exploded in the colonies, April 19, 1775. The size of the fighting forces rarely exceeded 15,000 men. Both patriots and redcoats relied chiefly upon the musket and bayonet. Samuel Mansell, 59, joined the Patriot Army, and the fighting continued for 8 years. His military rank was Major.[2]
