There is some confusion as to dates. The account in the Parkes family history booklet gives the last of the three above. A contemporary diary would suggest that the first two are correct.
According to the Parkes's family history (Parkes 1840 1940), Samuel Parkes was the son of Samuel Parkes, the famous chemist (author of Parkes's Chemical Catechism'). This cannot be because the famous chemist only had one child, a daughter.
Moreover, the Chemical Parkes and his family came from Worcestershire not Kent, the part of England claimed as the origin of the NZ Parkes family
